High Wind Design (HVHZ)

FLORIDA has special designated high wind areas and they are defined as HVHZ (High Velocity Hurricane Zones). Florida’s most well-known HVHZ area is BROWARD & DADE Counties. Metro has the following High Wind Design approvals:

#FL-698-R1 - APPROVED to the 2004 FL-Bldg Code (For use in NON-HVHZ areas with Metro Tile, Shake, Roman & Shingle panels)

#FL-6710 HVHZ - APPROVED to the 2007 FL-Bldg Code (For use in HVHZ areas with Metro Tile, Shake & Roman panels)

Dade Co., NOA # 11-0808.08 - APPROVED (For use in HVHZ areas with Metro Tile, Roman, Shake, Shake-II, Settler Shake, Pacific Shake, Pacific Tile & Roman-Villa Tile)

Metro’s FL-6710-R1 HVHZ Install Instructions are shown on two (2) pages as PDF’s from the www.floridabuilding.org website. They define fastening location, size and number and are identified as: DIRECT-to-DECK or BATTEN installations. Merely select the type of construction-install application you’re using and attach to your permit application data for presenting to your local city building department within the respective HVHZ area. A condensed version (without copies of test reports) of this on-line Approval is also available below as a PDF.

Metro’s FL-698-R1 NON-HVHZ Install Instructions are shown by the respective Metro profile (Roman, Shake, Tile, Shingle, etc.) and for each particular Wind-speed, Exposure (B or C) and Bldg., Hgt., not to exceed 30ft. Merely select the type of construction-install application you’re using and attach to your permit application data for presenting to your local city building department. A condensed version (without copies of test reports) of this on-line Approval is also available below as a PDF.

NOTE: On a per FEE basis any project’s that either exceed a “MEAN” building height of MORE than 40-ft., or require “Site-Specific” engineering can be engineered to meet the codes. Complete a High Wind Design Request Form and fax to Metro at (760) 435-9412 for a FEE QUOTE for this service. Allow a minimum of four (4) weeks for processing the design calculation.
